Enroute Hangzhou China via the Apple Store

Out the door at 5:30am this morning for a trip to Hangzhou, China.

Maybe I am an over packer but does anyone really meet the 20kg weight limit?    I just don’t see how it is possible.

Samantha Thavasa is expanding into sweets.   If you aren’t familiar with Samatha Thavasa it a Japanese fashion company that heavily uses western celebrities such as Beyoncé, Nicky and Paris Hilton, Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Lopez (to name a few) for marketing.

One thing I am starting to notice about Japanese airports is the extensive amount of empty space…

The one thing I love about traveling is the uninterrupted time where I can pound out a significant amount of work in a short period of time.   For those that are not overly familiar with the Mac, the last icon you want to see when booking your Mac is a question mark.    It means one of two things; 1.  Your file system got a little lost and you can simply boot from the boot disk and all is well.  2. Your hard drive has just died.

Having a little experience with this I knew it was #2 for me.  Feel free to enjoy reading the 1st, 2nd and 3rd time this happen to me.

Not Good

I am not sure why I have such bad luck with Macs but I am a very practical and pragmatic person.   I actually carry a full back up in my bag for just these types of cases so I set off to figure out where I am going to secure another Mac to keep my trip alive as I can’t function without one.   For future reference, you can’t buy one in Haneda or Osaka Airports…No ‘Smiling Tokyo’.

No Mac so might as well take some photos…I like the plane flying in the background.

With a little effort and luck I was able to find a ‘Apple Store’ in Hangzhou.    The staff didn’t speak a lick of English but they tried to help me recover my Mac and confirmed it was issue #2.   I was able to pick up a 15′ MacBook Pro with an English keyboard.

The one thing I immediately noticed in Hangzhou are these rental bikes all over the place. Red Bikes Hangzhou China

The beautiful West Lake right outside my hotel…

Now off to an evening of catching up on my backlog of work…but the Mac is back!

I was traveling so I bought a new one. My original one is under warranty and plan to get it replaced when I get back to Tokyo.

Hey Dave, did you get the new mac as a replacement for yours because of warranty, or did you have to buy a new one?
My mac’s charger got broken last week and here in Argentina it is a hassle to try to get a new one…

Wow. Your Mac crashing makes me scared now. I’ve got ClamXAV but I haven’t really utilized it. I must give it a try.

Hmm, my aunt’s baggage almost always meets the 20kg limit. Maybe it’s because she brings a lot of us for us when she visits from Florida, and takes a lot back when she goes home. :)

Thanks Matthew. I’ll try that. With my luck I might be the one person who gets a virus on a mac…

Wow the mac crashed again. As a former Apple employee, I would like to suggest that perhaps it isn’t bad luck. It is quite possible that there is a virus lurking in your back ups. So every time you reinstall on a new computer you get the virus again and eventually that hard drive crashes. You might wanna try running clamxav. it is a free virus scanning program for mac and works really well.
