Tonight’s ‘Supermoon’ over Tokyo

Tonight there is a ‘Supermoon’ over Tokyo and the rest of the world.   A supermoon is a fluke of orbital mechanics that will bring the moon close to the Earth than it has been in 18 years orbiting at 221,567 miles from Earth vs. the average distance of 238,000 miles.  This happens exactly at 2PM CDT at which time the moon was full only 50 minutes earlier.     The relative nearness of the moon makes it appear 14% larger and 30%brighter than other full moons.   Future dates include: Nov 14, 2016, Jan 2, 2018, Jan 21, 2023, Nov 25, 2034, and Jan 13, 2036.

Grab a cup of coffee, tea or wine and the hand of someone you love and head outside tonight and watch the ”biggest moon of 2011.”   It is truly beautiful to see.

If you want to learn to photograph the moon read THIS.

Thanks Dave! I’ve actually been experimenting in both those modes, so at least I feel better knowing I’m doing something right! I also took your advice about the books! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it!

Thanks LeeAnn. If you are new to your SLR, I would recommend you pick up Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Exposure as well as the rest of his books. They will really help you get control of your SLR and know why you should be using certain settings. Also I would suggest only shooting in AV and TV going forward until you are comfortable shooting manual. Also focus in manual. Your photography will improve 10x. You can switch to auto for family events (for now) so you don’t loose moments but suggest you give this a try and after a few days of frustration you will look back and be surprised how good your pictures now are.

What an amazing photo! I tried my hand at it last night, but I just don’t have the knowledge or the equipment to get a shot with this much detail. Funny story though, my family, who know that I have a love of photography and a camera always within reach, surprised me and bought me a Canon 60D for my 45th birthday a few days ago! Talk about intimidation…LOL! I’ve never in my life held a camera with so many buttons and dials! I’m scared to death! They told me it was time to move on with my photography, they seem to think I’ve got “the eye” for it, and have strongly suggested I get off my butt and take a few classes. Easy for them to say, I have no idea where to start! Then I came here today, and thought, why not start at home! So, later today, I’ll start hitting the pavement, and begin a whole new journey in what my kids seem to think is a turning point in my life. Although, I know I’ve got a lot to learn before I’ll ever be able to even come close to the skill and ability you have, I just want to thank you for the inspiration you’ve given me today, and to thank them for the taking the initiative when I could not. I just love them, they’re the best!
