Tokyo Photo 2013

For those in Tokyo this weekend you are in for a treat.  Tokyo Photo 2013 is being held at Zojo-ji.   Top galleries from US, Europe and Asia are showcasing and selling their best prints including some very rare vintage prints.   I was able to see Tokyo Photo last year at Tokyo Mid Town.  It is a ton of fun, a great crowd and lots of interesting people to speak with. Zojo-ji has a long history dating back to 809 but has been in its present location since 1590.  Six of the 15 Tokugawa shoguns are buried at Zojo-ji.   There are some very interesting parts of the temple to explore.  I didn't have time as I wanted to get into see the photos so I need to head back here and spend a few hours exploring.

Event details:  Zojoji, 4-7-35 Shibakoen Minato-ku, Tokyo 105-0011 Japan, 12:00 - 19:00 until September 30th.

Today's configuration: Leica M9-P with a Summilux 21mm f/1.4, Summilux 35mm f/1.4 and a Noctilux 50mm f/0.95mm.

I stopped by and spoke with Eric Luden at Luden Fine Art.   Eric is an ex Ilford executive who has started a few photography related business.  They were selling a lot of very cool photographs of Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead and a set of never before printed images of the Beetles.   The Beatles images where shot an intern for a local paper who was covering their first concert in the United States. The images were never printed until Eric printed them in 2011 and the entire series of silver gelatin prints sold out at Christie’s auction house in 1 hour.  The images are fantastic.  You can see them all here.

As we talked we learned that we are both from Boston but I also remembered reading about their very cool Kick Starter project to keep Silver Gelatin Prints alive at his other business Digital Silver Imaging.  I meant to sponsor it but somehow distracted myself.  I want to print so new photos for my home office so I will be trying it out.   More to follow...

I was carrying my Noctilux around most of the time and kept having people ask about it.  The best way to explain the lens to people is to take a headshot and show the effects you can get.  The sign behind this woman's head was only about 3 feet from her eyes!  You can't even read it.

I stopped by and was speaking with the people at Magnum Photos.  I always run into them at Leica events.   I noticed they were selling a print of Elliott Erwitt's Chihuahua.  I figured it would make a cool edition to my home office.
