All in M Monochrom

Meeting Ami Yamato

In this day and age there are a lot of people that you know from online that you haven’t met in real life.   It is just the way the world works and is so interconnected now.  I was so excited this week to bump into one of my favorite people from the web –

It's all coming together

It has been a busy couple of months for me.   It is hard to describe how busy I have been.   I have little time for basically everything. I was able to meet up with my friends Lui and Richard at a Happy Hour last week.  It is always good to see them.  I first met

Last Week

I have been getting up super early to avoid the head and crowds on the train to work.   I am getting to work so early I sometimes arrive before Starbucks opens… I enjoy the quiet peaceful commutes to the office.    Nothing particularly special has been going on

Gambatte Kai

I was recently recruited to a new company and will be starting a new job on Monday.  I won’t go into the details here on ShootTokyo.  You are welcome to guess but my  answer/confirmation will be on my LinkedIn on Monday when I update it. I’ve had the past

YouTube Japan Happy Hour

I met up with Luke Hahn who runs a site called Made by Peoplewhere he and his partner interview artist from all over the world.  Luckily they asked me meet with me while they are in town to shoot a bit of me street shooting to add to an interview on me

Behind the scenes

When I was shooting my Kickstarter video a few weeks ago I ended up shooting a lot of shots during the filming.  I thought it would be fun to share the ‘behind the scenes’ shots… We started off in Golden Gai.  It is one of my favorite locations in

Being Focused

I love the feeling when I first start processing images from my Leica Monochrom.  I have the same thought every time.  Why don’t I shoot with this camera more.  The image quality is just so fantastic.    The details in each image continue to surprise me.  I

Back in Golden Gai

This is the 3rd and final leg is my fantastic night of photography last week.   Here is one and two. I wish every night of photography for me is like this.   I was just having a great time.  Didn’t have a lot on my mind.   Scenes and images just seemed to appear

Yakitori in Shinjuku

Continuing on my trip to Shinjuku with my friend Scott.   We surfaced from the subway and these two kids were sitting in front of McDonald’s eating some fries.     They were fun to shoot. I am really happy with the images from this outing.  Sometimes I am just

En Route Shinjuku

My friend Scott was in town on business this week. We both have a lot in common; we both love Japan, speak Japanese, have Japanese wives, and love photography. It’s a little freaky to meet someone that has that much in

Anthemble in Marunochi

I held another networking Happy Hour at Athemble in Marunochi last night.  I previously held Happy Hours at Mood Board and So Tired (my favorite place to go eat after work).  You see many photos of mabudofu in my Instagram stream from So Tired.  I love that place.

The Photographers Bar

Last night I headed off to Shinjuku to meet up with a friend of mine who was in town on business.   I love getting back to Shinjuku.  I spent the first 1o years of my career working in Shinjuku so this area is very familiar to me. Today’s configuration: Leica M

An Expensive Light Meter

In the first few week so shooting my Hasselblad I was really struggling to trust what my light meter was saying.  I was mostly shooting wide open.  On my light meter I would set my film speed and check what shutter speed matched my 2.8 aperture setting on my lens.

Setting the stage

I often get asked if I give photography lessons.    I really enjoy shooting and sharing what I know but I honestly don’t have the time to give lessons.   I do often go shooting with people when they are in town and will give them tips.   If a co-worker is

Safecast.org

I am feeling busier and busier as we approach the year end.   I am hoping that life slows down over the holidays and gives me a chance to catch up at home with my family. Today’s configuration: Leica M Monochrom with various Leica lenses My Audi sales guy has

A busy start to the week

When I was in Sydney last week I didn’t get much chance to get out and shoot.  I was able to capture this shot of Darlin Harbor out of my hotel window.    I have one more trip for the year and then I am done.   I have a red eye to Singapore on Sunday and a red

On the road again

I’m back on the road again.  I am sitting at Narita Airport waiting for my red eye flight to Sydney.   I can’t count how many red eye flights I have taken this year.  Actually I probably can but I prefer not to.

Black (& White) Friday

I got up early today and as I was heading out the door at 6:45 as usual I realized I didn’t have any early morning meetings for once.   The benefit of working for a US based company – Thanksgiving Weekend!   While it isn’t a holiday in Japan I can

Mood Board

I have been trying out a new approach of hosting ‘Happy Hours’ as a technique of team celebration coupled with company awareness/market awareness with a lot of success.   In August I rented out the famous and trendy bar ‘So Tired’ in Marunochi
