Land of the Rising Cone
My favorite post on ShootTokyo is my 'Speaking as the World's Foremost Authority' on the Excessive Use of Cones where I talk about cultural observations in how traffic cones are excessively deployed throughout Tokyo. If you follow my Instagram account I am always posting new funny sightings of cone being used. The excessive use of traffic cones often make it feel like The Land of the Rising Cone. There is a lot of deeply embedded cultural traits at play here. People often think I am going out of my way looking for these examples so I decided to take a walk in one direction within about 5 blocks of my house to see what I could find.
Today's configuration: Leica M9-P with a Noctilux 50mm f/0.95
Don't hit the wall when you pull into your driveway...
I can't tell if this one is placed to provide a bit of personal space for the rock and the buckets or perhaps it is to protect us from them or maybe to protect them from us...
Culturally polite way of saying do not park here. To reenforce my request I will put an object in your way. The real issue with this ends up being that people just park to the right of the cones taking up even more room. The typically response is to increase the number and size of cones or to pot some plants.
Ready for action...
Don't walk into the construction tape...you can see its peer in the reflection.
Hmmm...
This cone has clearly tried to escape more than once...
Proper use case. I would be very easy trip over this. My guess is these cones will stay here for a long time to come. Whoever hit it will claim they couldn't see it because it wasn't clearly marked. You actually see this with new building in Japan there they build these beautiful steps made from rock and within weeks there is caution tape on every step and cones everywhere.
Did someone crush the cone or is the rock some way of extending the cone's useful life?
Is this how it starts...
In case they make it past the chain...
Are the bricks to protect the cone or the cone to protect us from the bricks?
Thanks for stopping by today!
