The White Tigers Corps

The next leg in my Fukushima trip was to Iimori Hill in Aizuwakamatsu.   This hill overlooks the city and Tsuragajo Castle can been seen off in the distance.   During the Boshin War (the civil war between the Tokugawa Shogunate and those seeking to return political power to the imperial court)  a small group of young samurai retreated to Iimori HIll during a battle.   They were part of a group of samurai called The White Tiger Corps. From the hill they could see smoke rising from fires in the city.  They mistakenly thought they castle has fallen and thus their fellow samurai and their leaders.   Thinking the war was over and they lost all of the committed ritual suicide.   All but one of them were successful who carried this story forward...

Tsuragajo Castle can be seen off in the far distance just in front of the mountains and this is where the young samurai thought they saw their castle fall...
